Stocks substantially substan-tially enhanced foday their gains of the preceding session, but profit taking made moderate inroads before the close. Although Al-though trading frequently halted,, there were marked indications of a revival of public interest or support. The further strength of rails probably was based on the liberal policy of the government regarding financial assistance, although the better earnings already submitted sub-mitted for -March promise much needed relief from the midwinter's adverse conditions. con-ditions. Transcontinentals and coalers featured the rails, Canadian Pacific's extreme gain of 3 points being ascribed to the favorable report issued at yesterday's annual meeting. meet-ing. Low-priced rails were led by New Haven and several of the western and southwestern issues at average advances of 1 point. Equipments easily led the entire movement. move-ment. United States Steel reaching its previous maximum of the year at a gross advance of 1, to 98. Republic Iron and Superior Steel were 26 and 3 points higher, while Bethlehem, Crucible and Lackawanna Steels gained 1 to lVi points. Coppers, oils, tobaccos, leathers and sugars helped swell the total at variable gains, and the usual unclassified stocks advanced 1 to 4 points. Shippings were the only reactionary shares, although American Shipbuilding was conspicuous for Its gain of S points. Sales amounted to 475,000 shares. Bonds were irregular, Liberty first and second 4s yielding to later pressure. Sales, par value, aggregated $6,150,000. United States bonds (old Issues., were unchanged on call. |
