Show AN ENEMY ALIEN. Walter Spreckels, who has been in the United States for thirty years without with-out signifying his intention of becoming becom-ing an American citzen by taking out naturalization papers, lias been forbidden forbid-den by tho Yonkers, N. Y., police to enter the sugar factory of which he has been general manager 'for sixteen six-teen years. The plant is that of the Federal Sugar Refining company and is on the Yonkers water front in the enemy alien barred zone. He is lucky to be allowed to exist anywhere in the United States outside of an internment camp, for he is undoubtedly German to the core. If we remember correctly it was the Federal Sugar Refining company com-pany that made so much bother about government control and it was one of the Spreckels family that made so many charges and indulged in so much bitter criticism before one of the senate committees. com-mittees. It now appears probable that German influence was behind the performance per-formance and as nothing ever came of the charges they may be considered as being absolutely untrue. It was an American Spreckels who endeavored to place stumbling blocks in the pathway of the food administration. It may be that his motive, was purely selfish, but it looks like a case of pro-Germanism at this distance. About the attitude of the German Spreckels there can be no doubt, lie is for the kaiser and Prussian Prus-sian domination and his very presence is detrimental to the best interests of the United States as well as offensive to patriotic citizens. We do not want such parasites over here, piling up wealth to be taken back to Germany. |
