Show HOUSING BILL. The senate has passed the $00,000,000 housing bill, and it has goue to conference, confer-ence, many amendments having been made to the measure since its passage by the house. The debate lasted two weeks in the upp'er chamber, and the thief objections to the proposed law were made upon the ground that it is socialistic. Other countries, Great Britain Brit-ain included, have been wrestling with the same problem for some time, and in all of them the housing proposition is favored. To meet the objection that such laws are socialistic, it may be said that they seem to be necessary and that they will have a tendency to make the workingman more contented with his lot and keep him from drifting into the ranks of the Socialists. With roofs over their heads, work at good wages and an opportunity to educate edu-cate their children, we do not believe any considerable number of American vvorkingmen could be tempted to embrace em-brace Socialism. Therefore, we believe the housing bill right and proper at this time, the more so as it became evident some months ago that the thousands of shipyard workers could not be properly housed unless congress could be induced to take action. |
