Show GENERAL ARMANDO DIAZ, who commands the victorious allied army in the drive against the Austrians. WILL ESTABLISH mm post Supplies for Fort Douglas to Be Bought in Local Markets. Establishment of a subquartcr master supply depot at Fort Douglas, through which all supplies for the local post will be bought locally instead of being purchased pur-chased through the quartermaster depot at Omaha, is to be authorized by the war department, according to Information Informa-tion received from "Washington. Establishment of this subdepot here will mean at present that about $23,000 to $30,000 a month spent for supplies for the post will be disbursed through the local depot to merchants of Salt Lake and Utah instead of being spent through the Omaha depot. Supplies, especially subsistence supplies, will all be purchased pur-chased locally and through the local sub-depot, sub-depot, under the proposed plan, whereas now all, or nearly all, of such supplies are bought through the Omaha depot and, shipped to the quartermaster at Fort Douglas for distribution there. While the proposed change means the disbursement locally of $25,000 to $30,-000 $30,-000 a month now, as the post Increases In population under present development plans the monthly expenditures for subsistence sub-sistence and other supplies will increase to $10,000 or 530,000, or even more, It ls est imated. Aids Local Merchants. This money will be distributed locally and Salt Lake and Utah merchants will have opportunity to directly furnish supplies sup-plies to the post instead ,of all these supplies being bought through the Omaha depot and then shipped here for use. This is an indication of the importance impor-tance not only to the local post, but to Salt Lake and Utah, of the plan for establishing es-tablishing a subdepot at the local' post. For a numDer of months past local business organizations and men have been endeavoring to have tho quartermaster quarter-master department of the army authorize au-thorize the establishment of a subsupply depot at the post, ro that materials might be bought direct here Instead of having to be purchased outside and shipped here from Omaha. There was a brief time before the Twentieth infantry' left the post that the local subsistence division di-vision of the post quartermaster department depart-ment was permitted to purchase certain supplies locally, and the benefits were found to be numerous. Later, however, 1 an order was issued forbidding the local purchase of supplies and requiring the subsistence and quartermaster offices to purchase all supplier through the depot quartermaster at Omaha. Under this arrangement some articles, especially of food, that the war department depart-ment purchases in Utah are shipped from here to the depot quartermaster nt Omaha. ixtid then shipped back here to Fort Douglas Doug-las tipon requisition from the local quartermaster. quar-termaster. This makes a double shipment ship-ment of goods that are produced in Utah and are ultimately onsurned in Salt Lake. The freight charge for double shipment adds to the cost of rations at Fort Douglas and bafl been an Important Impor-tant elemert in the reported "high cost of feeding soldiers" a t Fort Douglas. Establishment of the subouartcrmnstcr (Continued on Page Tnreo.) WILL ESTABLISH DEPOT AT POST , . (Continued from Page One.) supply depot at the post would eliminate elimi-nate this double shipment of supplies and reduce the "cost" of such supplies. It would enable the direct purchase of materials ma-terials produced in Salt Lake and Utah and the government would save the cost, of freight which has piled up on the shipments to and from the supply depot at Omaha. Hence it is seen that not only would local producers benefit by the establishment of the subdepot here, but the government would be saving money for itself in the way of freight charges. Local Bodies Get Busy. , The Manufacturers' Association of Utah and other business organizations of Salt Lake and Utah took the matter up some time ago with a view to bringing bring-ing about the establishment of the sub-depot sub-depot here. This was done after it had been advertised extensively that it cost 5 cents a day more to feed soldiers at Fort Douglas than at any other post in the country. An investigation of this report re-port was made by the business men and organizations, with the result that representations repre-sentations were sent to Washington to the effect that the added cost of rations here was due to freight costs brought about through the shipment back and forth of supplies between Utah and the quartermaster depot at Omaha. It was pointed out that this cost could be reduced re-duced considerably , by having purchases of such supplies made direct' here through a subdepot at the post, and that prices could "be obtained in such manner that were just as favorable as could be obtained ob-tained through the depot at Omaha. The manufacturers' association went so far as to send a man back to Omaha to confer with the depot quartermaster there in relation to the matter, and the UJah delegation in congress took the matter up with the quartermaster general of the army. .The result is that the matter has been given careful consideration by the quartermaster quar-termaster general and the war department, depart-ment, and it is now announced from Washington that a decision has about ljeen reached to establish the subdepot at Fort Douglas. The quartermaster at the fort has not been officially notified of the proposal as yet, but, having been advised of the negotiations nego-tiations under way, has rather anticipated antici-pated that something of this sort would be done. Me is awaiting official orders on the subject. |
