Tho captains and three sergeants ser-geants from each battery will form the balance of tho students who will first undergo the instruction. Sessions will be held each afternoon, beginning tomorrow, to-morrow, wilh the exception of Wednesdays Wednes-days and Saturdays, when the periods have been arranged during the mornings. morn-ings. School Is Complete. The gas defense school, uhich is under un-der the supervision of Colonel Yale and a British officer recently from the trenches, is complete in every detail. Hundreds of the latest models of musks are1 awaiting the students. An airtight air-tight house' has been constructed on tho school-site, and long cylinders containing con-taining the poisonous vapor have been installed. The gas in these cylinders will be released ami Ihe men will then enter the building with their maslis in place when the instruction will reach this point. Tho first days of instruction, however, how-ever, will be complete and will be held entirely out of doors. The men will be thoroughly acquainted with tho construction con-struction of the masks and the packets which are a part. Drills will follow which will tend to speed up the soldiers sol-diers in the adjustment to their faces. These drills will continue until the men ( reach the Tjoint where they can effec- . tively ' don the masks within a few f seconds. 0 Instruction Practical. Later the instructors will acquaint the students with the odors of the different dif-ferent deadly gases so that they may detect tbem from the many gases which continually sweep the " battlefields, such as gas caused by tho explosion of shells and bombs, which, of course, is harmless. Tiie entrance into the house filled with the deadly fumes, in which no living thing could exist, will mark the perfection of the training, and tho students will be graduated and become instructors for the remaining members of the regiment. The Utah camp was a scene of but little activity today, as the men are visiting San Diego and nearby towns. During the afternoon a few relatives ajid friends of the artillerymen, vho have recently arrived from Utah, took advantage of the visiting day and inspected in-spected the camp. Many Parties Held. San Diego was the scene of many parties and dinners last night which were given to the Utah boys by tho Utah people here. ,Earl Andrews, Whose home is in Salt Lake, and who is a member of the San Diego naval training train-ing school and was also a member of the naval football team which defeated the. Utah eleven New Year's day, eased the sting of defeat from several of the Utah players by giving them a dinner partv. Those present were Arthur Dri-nen'of Dri-nen'of C battery, Andrew Coffey, C, batterv, Hebe B. Young and W. B. Kelly of E battery. Privates C'affey, Drinen and Kelly have all made application for service, in the aviation corps, and are now awaiting orders which will place them . in training as flyers. Jp' Miss lone Thornberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thornberg of Salt Lake, was married last night to Private Pri-vate Arthur M. Thomas of the headquarters head-quarters company. The ceremony was performed in the. San Diego hotel. Utah people continue to arrive in San Diego. The latest arrivals at the San Diego hotel are Mrs. J. H. Fox, Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Hansen, Mrs. 1 A. Cramptor. Mrs. F. Xewton and Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Burton, all of Salt Lake. |
