Patriarch ."efr was the son of John and Mary Barr Neff and was born In Strasburg. Lancaster county. Pa., December Decem-ber 2S, 1S37. His father and mother became be-came converts lo the Mormon faith in 1842 in Pennsylvania and moved to Illinois Illi-nois in 1S44, going to Nauvoo in 1S46, from which point they started for the west in 1847, arriving in Salt Liake in October of tliat year. At Winter Quarters, before leaving for the Rockv mountains, the elder Neff bought the necessary machinery and started the first Utah grist mill In Kast Mill Creek in 1848. Decedent for several years acted as presiding elder over the East Mill Creek branch of the Cottonwood ward. In iai he made a trip to Fort Bridger in O. P. Rockwell's company and in 1862 lie participated par-ticipated In the expedition sent out under Captain Lot Smith to guard the mail route. In lS72-'73 he filled a mission to England, presiding over the Liverpool mission. From 1874 he served as counsellor counsel-lor to Bishop Wiliam G. Young of the Cottonwood ward until July 16, 1877, when the East Mill Creek ward was organized and uf which he was made bishop. Surviving Patriarch Neff are his widow, wid-ow, Mrs. Ann Kliza Benedict Neff, and the following daughters: Mrs. Albert Spencer Mrs. C. K. Stillman. Mrs. Samuel Sam-uel V Cornwall, Mrs. James O. Smith, Mrs. P. 7. Hixson, Mrs. J. Stokes, Jr., and Mrs. I. Loralne Bagley. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 12 o'clock noon in the Granite stake tabernacle. |
