Show PASSENGER ENGAGES IN DUEL WITH BANDIT Latter Forced to Jump ! i Through Car Window j While Train Is in Motion, j I SIOUX CITY, Iowa. Dec. 22. A bandit made a futile attempt to hold up the passengers pas-sengers in the smoking car of a Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul train from Chicago, as it was entertlng the yards here tonight. The bandit escaped with $10 In cash, after shots had been exchanged with passengers passen-gers and he had leaped through a window while the train was in motion. The bandit boarded the train at Morn-ingside, Morn-ingside, a suburb. With a mask drawn over his face and a large revolver in his hand, the man commanded com-manded J. R. Robblns of Jefferson, S. D., to begin taking up a collection from the other passengers. After $."0 had been collected. col-lected. Will Beath of Plumbush, Colo., appeared ap-peared in the vestibule to the rear of the bandit with a drawn revolver. Ho ordered the robber to throw up his hands. The bnndit swung around quickly and fired at Beath as the latter took shelter behind a partition. Several shots were fired by Be:th and the b;mdit. The bandit grabbed the collection which Robblns had taken up, kicked the glass from the nearest window and leaped through. Most of the cash collected by Robblns was dropped on the car floor during dur-ing the exchange nf shots. Many passengers pas-sengers hid under the seats. A piece of glass deflected by the bullet bul-let from the bandit's gun struck Beath over the eye. causing a deep, but not serious, wound. Beath believes his first shot hit the robber. ' Railroad detectives and police searched for the robber without success. |
