Show Women's Clubs j The programme fur the meeting of the I'tah Federation of Women's clubs in Ogden in October promises to be one of unusual interest, since three, prominent promi-nent figures iu the general federation will givo addresses. These are Miss Helen Barrett Boswell of the political science department; Mrs. John CL Sher- man, chairman of the conservation department, de-partment, and Mrs. Thomas 0. Whitney, 'chairman of the literature department. The visit of M rs. Percy V. kenny-backer, kenny-backer, president of the general federation, federa-tion, to the city the past week proved quite a (inspiration to Utah club women and the. criming of these other officials will be a further incentive to increased club effort, for the comin g winter. , The national meet ing oi the Daughters Daugh-ters of'tho American Hevolution in San Francisco the middle of September will bring another prominent club woman to ; Salt Bake, Mrs. William Camming Story I of New York, president general of the j Daughters of the American Revolution. M rs. (Story will arrive on a. special train a few days before the meeting in San ', Era n rise o, wit h a large delegation of lb A, JL represent a ti ves from the east. The party will be entertained by the 'Spirit of Libertv chapter, Daughters of the American devolution of this city and members of the local chapter doubtless will be in attendance at the California meeting. 4- California paper pa-per says: "One of the afternoons the delegates will be entertained with a reception by Mrs. Phoebe A. Hearst at her hacienda, near PJeasantou. ' ' Club women who have sat through programmes of great length and dealing deal-ing with so many different subjects that one's head ached at the thought of remembering or profiting by what was said, besides the worrv at being late to dinner, will appreciate the following follow-ing from the San Francisco Examiner; The future of clubs and club women has given more than one enthusiast food for thought in the last twelve months. Just what the answer will be in either cae is still a matter for wildest speculation. The questions doubtless will cum tinue to be mooted. And upon the answers probably no two club women will agree. There is a phase of ehih life whose future must be determined before the passing of many more years, That is the question of club and convention programmes. With the passing of time one wonders why is a club or convention conven-tion programme. Especially is the consideration .in.-,ti tied in the matter mat-ter of annual meetings of the various va-rious oi gii nidations. The pro-I pro-I gramme is the inducement for the ynarlv gatherings, yet it is the most ill-treated part of the entire scheme 'on vent ion programmes are in danger of "lying from overstuffing. Where one subject might be considered con-sidered sat is tar tori! v half a dozen I are interjected. Where one discus-j discus-j sion should b ten are arranged j for. And where one hour might i well be allowed for the eonsidera-j eonsidera-j tiou of a theme of absorbing iuter-! iuter-! e:-t a bare ten minutes is conferred. Fuderneath and over all is the in-i in-i ordinate and maddening henae of lurry. Federated club women are not peculiar pe-culiar in that fault. The error extends ex-tends through the organization of professional women and uplifters who seek b.v 0,,e mf-ans or another e give the world ail ef ged which it requires. Chinee thoughtfully at your schedule, Madame Programme i hairman. You have been arranging arrang-ing it during these last few weeks of midsummer, before the renewal of club meetings and activitv. Have you arranged for too much? If not, you are the exception. You convent inn programme chair men, do on recall that there are but four days for meetings ? Will vou try to crowd into four days enough for fourteen, and so spoil the effect ef-fect of each individual effort bv the oft-repeated and seemingly inevitable in-evitable quotation, "I'm sorry our time is so short, but we must hurry on!" Possibilities for club achievement are manifold. True, they are not so numerous as formerly, for club women have been achieving for moro than a decade or two. But the ''big" work seems yet to be done that of providing" properly balanced and satisfactorily brief programmes for club meetings. Some clever, capable club woman might make herself famous by devising de-vising such a programme, by giving giv-ing it to her fellow club members just once. Truly her name would be called blessed and her fume and her work would live after her.
