Show FIGHTING IN HAITI. Admiral Caperton has taken possession posses-sion of the office of the port at Port au Prince, the national palace and tho Haitian gunboat Pacifique. In so doing he was compelled to open fire on the Haitians, and one native was killed. Marines Ma-rines have been landed at Cape Haitien, the citizens disarmed and the revolutionists revolu-tionists barred from entering the city. While these events" were occurring a new revolution broke out at Gonaives, on the west coast, and Admiral Caper-ton Caper-ton dispatched a naval tug with marines ma-rines to protect the custom house. It seems to be the intention of the Washington authorities to prevent further fur-ther disturbances in Haiti, peaceably if they can, forcibly if they must. The killing of the Haitian is regrettable, but the natives must be given to understand un-derstand that no more revolutions will be tolerated and the marines and bluejackets blue-jackets are of course forced to fire when resistance is offered.. It is not a pleasant pleas-ant job for the United States government, govern-ment, but one that the world expects us to perform. Another cruiser and more marines have been ordered to the island, is-land, and it will not be long, we trust, before the Haitians are brought to their senses. |
