With but few exceptions the events n the senior national championships of the Amateur Athletic union were con tested right up to the tape and a matter mat-ter of a foot and sometimes only inches resulted in the transfer of athletlo titles Both f eld and track men, with the aid of a brisk wmd played fast and oose with world s records Two of these were bettered and three equaled while seven senior national A. A. U f gures were e ther equaled or badly shattered. Hair raising Finish. What was accounted the most sensa tional race ever seen on the Pacifio oast came at the finish of the five mile run which was won by H. Koleh mainen of the Irish American Athletic club of Wew York by less than a foot from Oliver Millard of the Olympic club of this city For four and two-thirds miles Kolehmamen Millard and G Hob food of the Multnomah Athletic club 'ortland. Or ran so close together that a blanket would have covered the trio With one third of a mile to go Millard set the clip and held a lead of a few feet over Kolehmamen with Hob good two feet behind the latter until the final 200 yards when Kolehmain nen drew up A heart breaking sprint began, with neither man able to gain, an inch and the thousands in the stand were thrown into a frenzy of excite ment Ten feet before the tape was reached Kolehmamen by a supreme ef fort gamed a few inches, which put him over the line f rat Hobgood was less than ten feet behind. Taber Is Beaten The big surprise of the meet was furnished fur-nished in the mile run when Gorman S Taber of the Boston Athlet o association associa-tion was beaten out by J W Bay of the Tllinn s Athletic assoc ation in another race which brought the crowd to its feet Taber jumped into the lead at , the start and held it to with n 2o0 yards of the f n sh when Bay with a wonderfully sustained spr nt passed the champion and won by the matter of mere inches The two biggest point winners of the day were A. Mucks of the ITmversity of "Wiscon n who annexed the shot and d scus t ties and Fred Murray of the Olympic club, who led the f eld in both the 120 and 220 yard hurdles each man scor ng ten po nts for h s club J E Meredith of the Meadowbrook athletic club of Philadelph a ran boau tif ully in the 440 yard race coming up from fifth place in the last hundred yards The Summaries 100 jard dash 'Won by J jQ Loomls, C cao A.
