Show EXPLANATION IS MADE OF STENSLAND PAROLE Springfield uC, Jan. 24. c g. Eckhart. chairman of the Illinois state board of parole, today issued a statement in explanation of the recent parole of Banker Paul O. Stensland from Jollot penitentiary. Included Is a letter from Trial Judge George Kcrsten, urging clemency. clem-ency. Chairman Eckhart says. In part: "It Is but right to state that when Stensland was apprehended In Tangier by Judge Olson and James Keeley, managing man-aging editor of the Chicago Tribune, he could not have been extradited, but when these gentlemen promised they would use all their Influence to obtain clemency for him, nnd that, if he would return, he could aid in securing more money for the depositors, ho agreed, and did ho. "The receiver disposed of 51,100,000 worth of notes secured by mortgages for $700,000. Had more time' been taken In disposing of these securities every depositor de-positor would have been paid In full. As it Is, they received 85 per cent. "The board of pardons endeavors to' keep faith with promises made by judges and state's attorneys, but the responsibility responsi-bility of the releaso of prisoners Is upon them and in this case held Stensland more than a year longer than tho trial judge and state's attorney recommended, ns Mr. Healy. state's attorney. In November, Novem-ber, 1908, recommended his parole." |
