Show INTEREST RUNS HIGH OVER . NEW ROUTE IN DIXIELAND Special to The Tribune. MODEXA, Jan. 21. The . selection of a new route by tho San Pedro. Los Angeles An-geles ft Salt Ijkc Railroad company to get around tho Clover Valley canyon and the Meadow Valley wash, remains an absorbing topic, and Interest In tho matter mat-ter haa become much Intensified since the railroad company has sent engineers Into the Held to look over tho various prospective routes. lames Andrus of St. George left Lund several days ago with several railroad engineers and will endeavor to show them how to gel out ot the fig and grape-country grape-country without the aid of a Zeppelin air tug. A careful reconnolsame of a new route, not before mentioned. Is also to be made. Engineer Arthur McGulrc reached here a. few days ago and. after securing pack animals and a guide, started to explore the route which Jo date has remained in obscurity. McGulrc will follow an entirely new route from Aeoma to Moapa. and to tho eastward of the present route. After passing through the northern end of the Clover Valley mountains, and west of the Rcsiver Dam wash, lie will shirt the east .side of the Mormon range, well up. and enter upon what Is locally known as Big mesa, thus avoiding all washes. The simple feat of crossing the Muddy rlcr near Moapa eliminates the only Hood hii'.ard on tills route, It is said. I'ntil now this route was generally regarded re-garded as being Impracticable, owing to ine rugged nature oi tne clover vaiiev mountains, which constitute the norlii end of the Mormon range. Old timers, who know I lie country well, now assert that while the road over this route would have Ilftcen to twenty miles of rough mountain country to pass through, that It Is "canyoned" so as to offer no great obstacles to construction, and thai several stiort. tunnels would easily overcome what few ridges mav possibly be encountered. The distance from Acoina to Moapa by the old route Is till miles. The new route, over the Big mesa. Is estimated to not exceed eighty-five miles. Persistent mioslioning of old settlors indicates that this route has much to commend it besides be-sides a reduction In mileage. According to the best authority, the road would bo diverted at a point near Aeoma, trend southeast for some distance, and next strike almost duo south. Crossing about live miles northwest of Jackson's springs, thirty miles from Acomu. it would bring St. Georgo thirty-five miles nearer the railroad than at present and thus possibly pos-sibly effect a happy compromise of the Dixie route, which is In lug agitated. m l girod rum! runs from .lai-ksnuV.
