Show PAYMASTER'S BOOKS WERE NOT CHECKED Loose System Prevailed in Keeping Accounts, Shown in Present Trial. VALLE.IO. Cal.. Aug. 15. With three sets of hooks kept In connection with the United States receiving ship Independence, Inde-pendence, no ono foupd time to double check the paymaster's accounts until hB got into trouble, according to exhibits made today at the trial of Paymaster A. M. Pippin, charged with embezzlement. By telegraphing to Washington past records of the Independence wore unearthed, un-earthed, in the shape of the ship's provision provi-sion returns. These were checked today against the ship's accounts current and cash book. No two accounts agreed. In one quarter quar-ter the cash book showed sales of provisions provi-sions for cash amounting to $1730.75, The accounts current showed receipts of S353.85. a discrepancy of 51377, while tho provision returns forwarded to Washington Washing-ton show no sales at all. The Washington returns. It was teslflod, wore In charge of Pay Clerk J. J. Fuller, who is accused bv the defense of responsibility for the shortage. Pippin's cross examination terminated today.
