Show BIG ELGIN ROAD RACES PROMISE GREAT SPORT By Associated Press. CHICAGO. Aug. 6. The big Elgin road races, August 26 and 27, promlso to bo the greatest road races ever given In the west; in fact, they arc the first to be officially known as the western Vander-bllt Vander-bllt races. The course Is far superior to that on which the Cobe races were, run last year, and at least ton miles an hour faster time Is promised. The people of Elgin and somo of tho largo Industries there have given trophies ana money so liberally that the best known drivers in the country will ho there. Including George Robertson and Ralph De Palma. Arthur W. Grciner of Chicago, holder of the American National championships, won at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the Fourth of July, with his National -10, Is entered in both days' races. The first day Is the 301-150 cubic inch class for 225 miles, and the second day for car3 of 600 cubic Inches or less for 325 miles. Mr. Grelner was the first entrant, and therefore has number 1 for both days. This will be Mr. Grciner's first appearance appear-ance behind the wheel of a. car in a road race, having made his reputation in speedway, track and hill ovonts. For the last two years ho has carried away the amateur honors at tho Algonquin hill climbs, and while on the speedway at Indianapolis In-dianapolis ho showed himself capable of holding his own with professionals. An attack of malarlnl fever kept him out of the Cobe race last year. Grciner Is probably prob-ably the best known of tho eight or ten amateur drivers who have won fame and glory at the wheel of a National -10 during dur-ing the spring and summer. |
