By the instillation of a mammoth steam hammer, a shears machine and a cold saw, the equipment of tho local shons of the Southern Pacific Pa-cific will bo grcaily improved. The three powerful machines have already arrived and aro being placed in position. The steam hammer is tho largest of its kind between Kansas City and tho Pacific const. It weighs 33U0 pounds, and Is necessary on account of work recently begun by the shop, which renders the smnllcr steam hammers inadoquato. The cold saw is another powerful machine. ma-chine. It will bo operated by a five-horse five-horse power motor. An axle of a locomotive loco-motive may be cut in half within a few minutes by the powerful saw, while tho same work would ordinarily require sov-eral sov-eral hours by the old method. Tho shears machine will bo used to cut sheet viron and plate. The great steel blades can handle 14-inch iron as easily as a barber clips hair. |
