Show IPRETENDER WILL ; THY FORTHHOME Don Jaime Called OIF Proposed Catholic Demonstration Till Time Is Ripe. I iS HOPING TO SECURE SUPPORT OF VATICAN Loader of Carlists Has His Lieutenants Busy Creating Sentiment for Him. BY OIEMENT J. BARRETT. 1 -y Lcnscd Wire to The Tribune. BOME, Aug. G. Tt was tho urgent .1) cheat of Don Jaime, the pretender to .' nc Spanish throno, that the Catholic demonstration at San Sebastian which was to be hold tomorrow was called off. This statement was mndo today by one of tho most influential friends of the Spanish pretender now in' Rome to urge tho Vatican to give its( approval and cunport to a Carlist uprising. It has become evident to tho Carlist leaders that in view of the cxtraordi 1 nary precautious taken by tho govern- I nicnt, the demonstration must lea, I to bloody clash aud a premature explosion explo-sion which would greatly strengthen the position of tho government. Going After tho Throno. Don Jaime is determined to mako a try for tho throne and his lieutenants are busy throughout Spain getting his forces in shape. Ho has, however, ct.ru ck a snag at tho Vatican. I understand un-derstand that all of his efforts to secure se-cure active co-operation of the church in an attempt to overthrow Alfonso, have been in vain. Tt has been deter-, deter-, niinod that at this juncture at least, it would bo unwise tto identify tho church with a dynastic uprising. Don Jaime fully realizes that he will probably never havo such an opportunity oppor-tunity again to put his pretensions to the tost. His lieutenants have impressed im-pressed upon him that it is now or never, that if ho fails to raise tho i standard of revolt now ho will be re garded as a .ioke so far as his pretensions preten-sions to the throno arc concerned. It is stated that tho Biscayan provinces, prov-inces, always strongholds of" Carlism, are ready to rise almost to a man, but ij conditions in other parts of Spain aro i! not yet ripe. Henco it was deemed bettor to have ( the San Sebastian demonstration called 4 off. In this the Carlists and the Vati- i can worked together. The Vatican does not wish to see bloodshed in Spain, at ij least while the controvcrs- with Cana- i lejas is in its present shape. |
