In 1829 the leaning tower of Pisa was 4 motors, 3S8 millimeters out of vertical verti-cal line, but during tho last eighty years the commission affirms that tho tower leans an additional 5.5 millimeters for every meter of Its fifty-four meters in altitude. The reasons given for this dangerous stale are principally that the base of the tower has already been immersed im-mersed in wator, and that a deep cistern dug quite near seventy years ago with the unsuccessful object of draining a basin around the foot of tho tower mado matters worse. The tower has already been considerably weakened by earlier excavation for a basin for mensuration purposes. Later. In 1S3-1. the sovcrest shock of an earthquake ever felt at Pisa left the leaning tower some thirteen centimeters moro out of the straight. Another main source of responsibility Is undoubtedly the oscillation from Its magnificent mag-nificent poal of seven bells. To Preserve This Wonder. Cardinal MaffI, archbishop of Pisa, himself him-self an illustrious mathematician, has straightway offered to co-operate with tho Italian government In every possible way for the preservation of this fifth among the seven wonders of the world. The cardinal has already given orders to suspend the ringing of tho, two biggest bells, called the Assumption and the Crucified Christ, which, though fixed on tho non-Inclined side of the campanile, weigh over 12,000 pounds. As for the smaller bells, they are to be forthwith beaten simply with the hammer. Tho leaning tower of Pisa wis begun in 1170, and took nearly a couple of centuries to complete. It Is 179 feet high, nnd 51 feet 9 Inches in diameter, cylindrical In form, tho exterior entirely built of white marble and the Interior of Verruca stone. Kept Family Prisoners.
