At an adjourned session of the City Council tonight tho Police committee, to which had boon referred tho matter of placing the police po-lice department back on tho old eight-hour eight-hour svstem formerly in vogue, recommended recom-mended that, this action bo taken, and it was approved by tho City Council. Chief of Police Browning sent in a recommendation rec-ommendation asking that Sergeant Charles Pincock be reduced to n patrolman. patrol-man. Itis understood that this action is taken for the purpose of cutting down the expenses of tho department. Tho recommendation was referred to the Police coniniittco. Should it bo decided de-cided favorably it will leave the department de-partment without a sergeant. ' The Fire committee recommended that hydrants be placed in the middle of the business blocks and that tho water mains connecting bo not less than eight inches. Councilman Plvgaro announced that the waterworks company was now ready to make this change as soon as the propor surveys aro made. This action ac-tion was taken on, the recommend ttion of tho fire insurance underwriters of the city, who secured a reduction in the rate several days ago. An ordinance creating a curbing and guttering district No. J, which is on Twenty-fifth street, between Jackson and Taylor avenues, passed' the third and final reading tonight. This work will cost tho citv, according to the estimates of tho City Engineer, $S 05.25. Upon the recommendation of the Coniniittco on Public Grounds, the old city hospital grounds and buildings thereon, at tho corner of Twenty-cichth street and Adams avenue, wero ordered sold at public auction to tho highest bidder. Councilman Flvgaro Introduced a resolution asking that action be taken at once to secure the portraits of former Mayors Conroy and Browning, to bo hung on the walls of tho City Council chamber along with those of other former Mayors. The resolution was unanimously adopted. Other routine business completed the session of the Council. |
