In a. bruising and mutilating conilict Ben Thurkcll, a soldier stationed at Fort; Douglas, after invading the room of Lillio Davis at. 22S South State street, Tuesday night, and robbing it, twice ferociously attacked Policeman ! George Burton, the arresting officer, tor- ' ribly punished him, and once escaped. With tho assistance of big Joe Bush, Burton finally recaptured and overpowered overpow-ered Thurkill and marching him off to jail, threw him into the "cooler." Thurkcll, it is alleged, carried away from Ihe Davis woman's room two purses, two phonograph records, a book and a small sum of money. As ho was escaping tho theft was detected and the polico were notified. Patrolman Burton ovortook Thurkcll and a terrific combat ensued. Burton was handicapped by a wound on his right hand, which. he carries car-ries bandaged, and Thurkcll escaped. After a sharp chase of four blocks Burton was joined by Patrolman Bush and tho two soon overhauled and cornered cor-nered ThurkoII. Seeing the odds were against, him he surrendered and went peacoably to tho station. There, after lie had ben- searched and all tho stoleu goods taken from him, a second fight occurred. Thurkell making a desperate effort lo escape. Burton and Bush were assisted by other officers and Thurkcll evonlually was subdued and thrown into in-to the ''cooler."
