Show THEY STILL TEACH IT. Yes, but President J. Golden Kimball and Apostle Clawson did say It, notwithstanding not-withstanding the whispered and other denials; and while It is not pretended that a verbatim report of their remarks re-marks was given in The Tribune, It Is practically self-proven that they did convey to the congregation precisely the Idea which The Tribune presented In Its report of tholr remarks. The sermons of last Sunday In tho Logan Tabernacle should be considered in a larger aspect than that of the mere words uttered. Itudger Clawson, an apostle, and the only living apostle who has' suffered Imprisonment upon conviction con-viction of polygamous marriage, took up the polygamous life of Father Abraham, Abra-ham, dealt with that ancient worthy as a friend of God: assumed that his life of that time could be transported to this modern day and that the non-Mormon non-Mormon women of the United States would not accept him In their moral and Intellectual societies. There could be but ono object In such an address, and that was to exalt tho practice of polygamy In tho minds of his hearers and to show tho wickedness of modern opposition to plural marriage mar-riage by the Mormons.. He did not dare to directly counsel members of his congregation con-gregation to engage in the practice, for which ho suffered some years of martyrdom'. mar-tyrdom'. But with Father Abraham as a text he could ,go Into a laudation which would be even a more efficient prompter than If he' were to offer open Instruction. For a little time after 1S90 the. Mormon Mor-mon leaders allowed Abraham" to rest quietly In his tomb, with only such occasional oc-casional reference to him as is made in other churches. But about the time of the rcnalBeance of plural marriage soon after the present president and the apostles concluded to return to it Father Abraham, as an illustration, began to work overtime. Whenever ,any preacher of the church wanted to pay his respects to -plural marriage, and his disrespects to the ministerial critics of the church, he trotted Father Abraham out and assumed that this excellent gentleman would not be regarded re-garded as a fit member of a modern sectarian congregation, and also that tho members of evangelical churches Would feel horrified at having to rest In the boBom of this famous polyga-mtst; polyga-mtst; thereby making plain that law or no law here the polygamlsts would be the elite hereafter. Of course, Abraham may have been a polygamlst, according to Holy Writ; but there Is no reaeon for Apostle Clawson's particular use of that fact, unless it Is to encourage the idea of plural marriage as a present practice, and to that end he presents Abraham by deliberate Intention so that his hearers hear-ers may have enhanced Ideas of the propriety of the renewal. And all that was but introductory to President J. Golden Kimball's Interesting Interest-ing rernarks. This gentloman Is one of the most straightforward and picturesque pictur-esque speakers of the church. We confess to a strong liking for some phases of Mr. Kimball's character he isn't afraid of anything on earth or In the nether regions; and he believes that people ought to declare what they , think, and that skulking Is a mighty poor practice for a church that pretends pre-tends to be led by God Almighty. After ihe scriptural Illustration which Apostle Clawson had elaborated, the congregation was en rapport with tho subject upon which President Kimball succeeded .him,. He. followed the dissertation dis-sertation on polygamy with a' glorious tribute to the Joys of parenthood; and he thus completed tho lesson. Could there be plainer teaching? Father Fa-ther Abraham ag a type of man who wa3 the friend of God. The blessing of i many, many children. It will puzzle tho lawyers of Congress to provide nr.y means of preventing these two gentlemen from preaching their doctrines. |
