Show Bountiful track star, Stephen Tueller, has scored another success. He participated partici-pated in the AAU-TAC 1980 Track and Field National Championships, July 25, 26, and 27 in Pleasant Hill, Calif., running the 1500 meter race. He placed a close second, with the fast time of 3:58, which broke the meet record set there. THIS NATIONAL meet brought together the "cream of the crop" of runners in our country. Fifteen hundred athletes from across the nation competed in this championship champion-ship meet. Stephen's win qualifies qual-ifies him as the second fastest runner in the United States in his age group. Stephen has an impressive track record, making a steady ascent. He is a two-time state champion in the 880 yard run, both in 4-A in 1979 and 3-A in 1980. As a result of these wins, he received an invitation in June to participate in the Duke City Dasher Spring Classic held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he placed first in the 1500-meter run. HIS WIN in Albuquerque won him an invitation to the Track City International Classic Clas-sic held at Eugene, Ore. on the Olympic track. Here he won a close second, with the remarkable remark-able time of 3:57, coming one-tenth one-tenth of one second behind the first place winner. His next step up, of course, was his participation par-ticipation recently in the AAU-TAC AAU-TAC Track and Field National Championships. Success doesn't come easy. It requires dedication, sacrifice, sacri-fice, self-discipline and a burning burn-ing desire to achieve. In running run-ning track, Stephen realizes that there is no one to rely on but himself. There is no team, no one to lean on. It's a solo effort in victory or defeat. But he has paid the price. MANY IS the time he has ground out the miles in ice and snow, heat and wind. But after reaching these pinnacles of success, he says it has been well worth it all. |
