Show DWR and USU study fishing and boating SALT LAKE CITY In an attempt at-tempt to improve fishing and boating opportunities in Utah, the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and the Division of Water Resources have teamed with researchers resear-chers at Utah State University to conduct a study of fishing and boating activities in the state. The study is designed to obtain detailed information on where and how often anglers and boaters participate par-ticipate in these types of water-based water-based recreation, the extent of participation par-ticipation involving children and other family members, and the numbers and types of fish caught. The study will also provide estimates of the economic value of boating and fishing to the Utah economy, as well as measure how satisfied people are with their fishing and boating experiences. Researchers are conducting a mail survey of a representative sample of Utah anglers and boaters who purchased fishing licenses or licensed a boat in the state in 1990. A total of 3,000 people are being asked to complete a short questionnaire question-naire about their boating and fishing activities in 1 991. Those included in the sample will receive several questionnaires during dur-ing the year, to allow researchers to estimate use during a specific month or months. DWR spokesman Don Archer says he hopes a high percentage of those surveyed will respond, so resource managers can get accurate information to guide management decisions and programs. "We're not getting a good return so far, and I hope those surveyed will return the questionnaires promptly so we can obtain reliable results," said Archer. |
