Show Upsets Are Numerous In College Football By PETE FRITCHIE , Southern California may be on the way to top rank at the end of the 1978 college football ' season. . .but don't count on it. Upsets this year have been numerous and Southern Cal is a young team, which can falter. ANOTHER HOPEFUL young team, Tennessee, is creating impatience at Knox-ville, Knox-ville, Tenn. Can Johnny Majors bring back the glory of Bob Neyland, and duplicate his career at Pittsburgh? It now looks like a long effort. Michigan might also end the season number one. Oklahoma might well be too strong for everyone. The Sooners must get by Texas, of course (which they haven't done as this is written). ALABAMA BEGAN with three super-tough games, and might still be in it. In getting by Nebraska and Missouri in games one and two, Alabama expanded much emotion and adrenalin. A third straight super-game, against Southern Cal, proved too much. Had the Tide gotten past Southern Cal, they would likely have been ranked number one for quite a time. |
