Show Falcons Seek Win Over Bonneville In Region One By DAVE WIGHAM OGDEN - On the surface this game pitting Clearfield against the Lakers of Bonneville might look like a mismatch. Afterall the Falcons Fal-cons are 1-4 in league play while the Lakers are 4-1 and one of three teams tied for the lead. ONE PERSON that doesn't look at this game as a mismatch mis-match though is the Bonneville coach. Two weeks ago prior to their game with Roy, the Laker coach noted that he wasn't as concerned with the Royals as he was with Clearfield. It seems in this league certain cer-tain teams have tough times with others and the Lakers have never had much success against the Clearfield teams they have played. PEOPLE ARE starting to wonder where the offense of the Falcons has gone. Two weeks ago they were shutout by Weber then last week they could only muster a field goal against the Viewmont club. Clearfield lost both of those games, to all but take them out of post season contention. Defensively the Falcons have been as good as any in the league the past few weeks but offensively they haven't generated much. Bonneville seems to be in the driver's seat as far as the league title goes with Clearfield Clear-field and Viewmont on their schedule, while the other two clubs, Bountiful and Layton, face each other this week. If Bountiful wins then due to their win over the Braves the Lakers would look good for the title, a Layton win would put the Lancers in the favorite's seat. THE LAKERS seem to nave settled on sophomore Cory Slyvester as their quarterback. quarter-back. Cory is an excellent passer who can also run with effectiveness. Also their big playmaker is tailback Marvin Ellis who is one of the fastest backs in the state, Ellis has the capability of breaking any running play for a big gainer. Curtis Lindsay is the fullback full-back and he too can break one if teams pay too much attention atten-tion to Ellis. Defensively the Lakers are led by middle linebacker Chris Fulton who is a great player who loves to hit people. BONNEVILLE'S defense seems to have one weakness, they are over-aggressive which has caused them some problems as of late. Against Sky View they all blitzed and the Bobcats ran a quarterback quarter-back sneak for 80 yards and a score. Clearfield must find a way to get points on the board. The pass might be their best bet with Larry Read throwing to the likes of Roger Vincent or Steve Beal. Read can put pressure on the Laker defense with a lot of roll outs. RUNNINGWISE THE Falcons Fal-cons have had problems with bigger lines. They aren't the biggest team in the league on the line, but if backs Mike Arrant or Doug Hamblin get some holes they can score some points. Bonneville needs the win to stay alive in the championship cham-pionship picture, Clearfield needs the win to save some face. Coach Brent Hancock of Clearfield used to coach at Bonneville prior to a stint with Weber State so he'd like nothing better than to win this one. IF THE Falcons can generate some offense then they could pull off the upset. |
