Vern is a meat cutter in the family business just off the freeway, and Christine is a secretary in Salt Lake City. Also a welcome to Mike and Linda Ballif at 3737 South Orchard Drive from Salt Lake City. Also to the Eldon T. Ellis family who have moved into the Michael Sturgill home at 3708 South 330 West. Elder Royall Banks writes from Goleta, Calif, (near Santa Barbara) that he was right in the middle of the recent earthquake there, but he is fine. The Val Verda Tenth Ward has grown from 245 to 440 members during its first year of existence. Clarence Bishop of Val Verda and former mission president of the South Dakota Rapid City Mission, spoke at the farewell in Provo for the first black girl to go on a mission. Mary Sturlaugson, a school teacher in Carbon, Utah was converted to the Church in South Dakota during dur-ing President Bishop's service ser-vice there. She has been called to the Texas San Antonio An-tonio Mission. The annual Val Verda Stake Red Cross blood drive will be next week on Oct. 27th at the Stake House, from 3 p.m. All blood types are needed. Elders of the Tenth Ward enjoyed a four wheel excursion excur-sion to Canyonlands over UEA weekend. The Wes Landen family took the last opportunity oppor-tunity of the summer to catch the sun's rays at Lake Powell water skiing. Honors were accorded members of VV Seventh Ward's Troop 767 at the last Scout Court of Honor. Nineteen Nine-teen merit badges were awarded. New second class scouts are Shawn Swenson, Kevin Cullimore and Linn Payne. First class scouts are Mike Hess, Scott Jensen and Clay Richards. Troy Cullimore received his Star Rank and Mike Anderson received his Life Rank and the Mile Swim Award. Newest Eagle in the nest is John Curtis. It was announced that classes in the various required merit badges, particularly par-ticularly the citizenship badges, are being made available at South Davis Jr. High School. Congratulations to newlyweds Kerry and Lisa Porter. Lisa is the daughter of Bill and Gayle Curtis of Val Verda; and Kerry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Everette Patterson Pat-terson Porter of Fresno, Calif.
