Show Bountiful-Layton Set For Annual Gridiron War Thurs. By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL - Now that the preliminaries are over it's time again for World War III " as the Layton Lancers get ready to invade the Bountiful field this Thursday night under the lights at 7: 30 p.m. GAMES HAVE been moved - up to Thursday this week due to the opening of Utah deer hunting on Saturday. Last week both clubs had , harder times than anyone had anticipated with the Braves coming from behind to nip Sky View 27-20 while the Lay-ton Lay-ton team had trouble getting going in their win over Weber. MANY OBSERVERS feel the lack of intensity last week was due to the game this week, both clubs might have been thinking about each other a week early. When these two clubs meet . the word most used is classic. Last year for example it took a fourth quarter goal line stand for the Lancers to preserve the league title. EACH YAR these two have a great game only topped the following year. These two are currently tied for the league, lead with Bonneville so again the league championship could be decided by this game. Layion has had a tougher defensehan the Braves in -'- league play but on the other-side other-side of the coin the Bountiful offense has scored more - points. Both play hard-nosed defensive football and both are somewhat conservative in -their offense. - THE LANCERS rely on their three running backs, Todd Stapley. Dave Burke and Art Leota to run the ball mainly from the option play while the Braves have a trio of their own in John Lud-dington. Lud-dington. Brad LaComb and Mike Krammer who run out of anything except the option. If Bountiful has a definite advantage anywhere it would be at quarterback where Lynn Muir is by far the better passer than either Tracy Chatwin or Mark Vigil of the Lancers. Chatwin played most of the game against Weber but Vigil came on in the fourth period to move the club leaving Coach Gary Hansen the option of which one will start. LAYTON PROBABLY gets the edge in the line with the likes of Chuck Ehin and Brandon Flint matching strength against the likes of Joe Denning and Taz Murray. The Lancers are bigger but the Braves may have the edge in quickness. - The kicking game could decide the outcome of this contest and Bountiful probably proba-bly has the upper hand here with punter Wayne Nelson, one of the best around, plus an added threat in return man Danny Gleen who ran a kickoff back 80 yards for a score last week. THE GAME pits strengths against strengths. Bountiful, with the passing arm of Muir, . is stronger on offense, while the Lancers have been awfully aw-fully tough to score on. It looks like a Bountiful offense against a Layton defense. Don't forget though that Lay- . ton has a good offense and Bountiful has a good defense. As sophomores the Lancers wonthe-game, last year the . Braves won in junior varsity competition. This is the deciding game. The two are almost dead equal which points to a great battle once again this year. |
