Show Vikings Over East State ISA -r ,i By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL Before anything can be written about the Viewmont and East football foot-ball game someone has to determine de-termine just which team the Vikings will field. WILL IT be the team that looked lost against Olympus a couple of weeks ago. Or will the team that knocked off Highland last week show up? How about the team that was ambushed by a strong Bountiful team? Maybe the squad that manhandled Woods Cross will be at East. TRUTH IS that no one is really sure which one of the Viking teams will be there. Not even their head man knows for sure, "We have to eliminate that. The Olympus game was my fault, I just didn't prepare the kids for it. As soon as we beat Woods Cross we turned our attention to the Highland game and just showed up for Olympus." Now comes a ery good East, much be ter than their 0-4 record would indicate. Viewmont needs the win to stay on top of a shot at the state tournament. Several things could happen, but the Vikes would be assured of at least a playoff for a state berth if they beat East. That's one thing the Vikings have in their favor, the must win situation. They have been at that spot on two other occasions. Woods Cross and Highland, and have won both times. "EAST IS a good team," noted Coach Pierce, "we'll approach this game the same as we have all the others. It's a championship game for us and we have to win to get into state. East is scary , they're big and good." The size factor used to carry some weight, in fact if you look at their losses this season it has come to some teams bigger than them. Bountiful and West, along with Olympus, were just too big for the linemen line-men at Viewmont. However, so was Highland and the Vikes did a number on them. AGAIN THE Viking linemen line-men will be looking up against East, they are big. East has a good running attack with Chris Walton and Rich Cook, they have good efforts against a strong Bountiful defense. Walton Wal-ton should get some kind of courage award, he looks like a walking hospital zone but the coaches can't seem to keep him out of the lineup. Mark Hardy is a fine quarterback quar-terback who can throw with the best of them and in Mike Adams he has a dangerous breakaway threat at a receiver spot. ROGER DAVIS has taken over the quarterback chores at Viewmont and as his line goes so goes Roger. Against Woods Cross and Highland he was given time to throw by his line and he did extremely well. Against Olympus he had opponents oppo-nents in the backfield before he got the snap. That means Jerry Miller, Brett Home. Mark Law, Gregg Boothe and Craig Roberts will have to have another good game. Roberts suffered an ankle injury last week as is a questionable starter star-ter this week. Steve Caputo continues to have a great season, against the Rams he gained over 100 yards. Jeff Porter has come on strong of late in the pass-catching pass-catching department, so has Chuck Whitney. OVER ON defense the Vikes have been getting great efforts from Paul Jensen, Tad Lindsay, Ted Jones, Anthony Skedros. Doug Lee, Brett Roberts, Boothe, Aaron But-tars But-tars and company. The insertion inser-tion of Lee in the secondary seems to have boosted them. You would think that with one team being 2-2 and looking forward to a state berth and the other being 0-4 and looking forward for-ward to basketball season this game would be easy to predict. FORGET IT. The Leopards are a great team and they enjoy football. They have nothing to lose in this battle and will play accordingly. Viewmont will need a strong effort from everyone to take East and get a shot at a state berth. But then again no one really knows which Viking team whill show up. THE ONLY way to know is to see for yourself on Friday at 3 p.m. at East High. First ve;ir he;id man Mark Pierce has his Vikings in a spot w here a win over F.asi eould gel them bac k into the state playoffs. |
