Bountiful DroDS East By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL Bountiful High shook off a sluggist first half and came back strong in the second half to down a very good East team 18-6 in the rain and mud. THE WIN left the Braves in possession of first place in Region Re-gion Four with a perfect 4-0 mark. East sank lower into the cellar with a 0-4 record. No one really knows uhat the deal was in the first half, there are two theories. First, the East side had nothing to lose in the game and came in fired up and ready to beat someone. Second, maybe, just maybe, the Braves were taking these Leopards a little lightly. Whatever the problem, the Braves took care of it in the second half. BOUNTIFUL did manage to get on the board in the first half but it was their strong defense that put the points there. Alan Schwab blocked a punt with Craig Holmes picking it up and ramblingU yards for the score in the first period. Steve Had-Icy Had-Icy attempted the extra point but was wide and the Braves led 6-0. TheT!raves offense had a chance to score in the first half but they fumbled the ball near the Leopard's goal line. East then marched down the field and soon had a first and goal situtation inside the Bountiful five yard line. At this point Hadley and Robert Franke led a defensive stand. Hadley made the final hit on a fourth down and less than one opportunity oppor-tunity for the Leopards as time ran out in the half. BOUNTIFUL dodged another bullet on the opening play of the second half. On their first play from scrimmage, scrim-mage, quarterback Mark Hardy Har-dy made a great fake on a running run-ning play up the middle and then lofted a perfectly thrown pass to Mike Adams who was all alone behind the Braves secondary. Adams let the ball slip between his hands, though, and the play went for nothing. The Braves got their second touchdown with the help of the defense again. Safety, Dave Wilson, made a leaping interception inter-ception near mid-field and returned re-turned it to the East 25-yard line before being knocked out of bbunds. Rob Eggett and Steve Hadley then alternated turns running the ball and soon the Braves were inside the East five. Todd Smith found a huge hole up the middle and took it in from there. Bountiful then elected to go for the two point conversion but quarterback quarter-back Phillip Schmutz slipped and fell on the wet turf leaving the score at 12-0. NEITHER TEAM could move the ball on their next possession but soon the Braves found themselves inside in-side East territory with just over eight minutes to play. Coach Paul Waite of Bountiful quickly noticed the East side was ignoring the pass and coming com-ing up strong to cover the run. In went his play in which Schmutz faked a run up the middle and then hit tight end Darrel Welling for a 37 yard touchdown. Darrel had worked work-ed his way free behind the secondary. Bountiful went for the two points again but the' Leopard defense held. East still came at the Bountiful Bounti-ful defense, strong. Big Chris Walton ran hard for East and soon he had his club near mid-field. mid-field. A quick pass to Rich (Cook turned into a big gainer 'as he broke a couple of tackles and rambled to the Braves five yard line. From there Walton took two efforts to score. The two point conversion was no good and the game ended 18-6. FANS, COACHES and play-en play-en from Bountiful all realized they had been in a great football foot-ball game. "That East side is as good as we've played all year," noted Principal Don Perkins. Indeed the Leopards played far better than their 0-4 league record would show. Bountiful, though, was just too much for the courageous Leopards. |
