Show PAUL TALKS ON UTUHBIRD LORE University Professor Explains Habits and Value of Feathery Inhabitants A-bout one hundred anil twenty boys representing every troop of the boy scout organization in Ogden listened yesterday afternoon at the Central Junior High school to an H- luetratod lecture by Professo- J. H. Paul of the University o Utah on "The. Bird Life of the State of Utah." Professor Paul had with him 50 specimens speci-mens of the most useful birds whoso habits and value to the community ho simply explained. "One chickadee is said to s;ivo the life of 30 trees In one year by reason rea-son of the way in which h? gets after the egga of harmful Inseots deposited In the trees," said Professor Paul. Ho also told of the snowy heron, -1000 of whom are living In the mountains of Utah and whose feathers a short time ago wero valued at $14 per ounce and are now worth $59. This Is tha only state in the United States wncro thl.i bird now lives and It Js up to the boys and men of Utah to preserve pre-serve this valuable flock. Professor Paul has promised lo come to Ogden again and speak to the boy scouts on the flowers of Utah. Arrangements arc being made for mountain hikes on which the boys will be taught how to distinguish the various flowers of the field and mountain, moun-tain, and shown the nesting places of valuable birds in the interests of promoting pro-moting the life of the birds.' Professor Paul la busy preparing a manual entitled "A Reading Course for Boy Scouts.' which will shortly be published by the University of Utah. |
