Show m GOLDEN GATE i BACK SGI Have you heard about it bcins Impossible Im-possible to get over the roads leading to the Golden Gate beauty, when its snowy, muddy 'en everything? Four week6 ago. when the roads were at their worst, Mr. and Mrs. It, G. Wh Itlatch, Ogden, started for Califor-i nia, following the Arrowhead trail. Their friends laughed at them, and said "You are foolish to undertake such a trip. It might be all right" said several pessimists, "if you were going iu a Ford." "A Ford," said Mr. Whitlatch, "why I could go 'through tho blackness of hades with my Oakland." Well, the trip was made, and the Oakland Sensible Six has Its place in the hearts of the two who saw the beauties of the west. One might travel over the country for years by train, and yet not see half what these people scon. Traveling in an auto, pulling through snow eighteen eight-een inches dce.p, mud that seemed to choke them; they were obliged many times to seek aid of the people who livd in what seemed to be "No Man's Land," and from whom they heard tales that were rich in human interest. Going through the picturesque valleys val-leys of southern Utah, visiting towns that were swelling with prosperity, Mr. Whitlatch said, the most hospitable people in the world, they came to Nevada. Nearly the entire area of Nevada lies within the vast table land known as the Great American Basin. The average elevation is from 4000 to 5000 feet between the Wasatch mountains on the east and the Sierra Nevadas i on., the west. The surface of tho basin ba-sin is crossed by a series of parallel ridges, some of which' have an elevation eleva-tion of 3000 feet, above the general level of the .plateau. As they crossed these great heights, they tried to picture the days when men came hither seeking their fortunes for-tunes in mining; they were glad they were seeing the country in a modern way. Nevada is noteworthy for the complexity com-plexity of its geological formations and marvelous beyond description, is ihe valley of fire, so vcalled becnuse of its red composition. Through this region there is no sign of human life, and to, be there in the "wee sma' hours of the morning is to feel all alone in this world Leaving Nevada the trail winds into a small portion of Arizona, which is also mountainous- they camq into the desert part of California. Here riding Is humorous, for there are many miles of road that has any amusement park in the world passed for roller-coaster i rides. These roads lead into the Sierra Madera Ma-dera mountains, and to what is famil lary known as the "Rim of the World" Many people who have seen the Alps saw "the Kim of the World" in' Sunny California is the most beautiful spectacle spec-tacle to be seen. Our Ogden friends liave returned. They met many auto drivers on the way who gave up in despair, stopping at some town until the roads were passable then returned home without reaching their journey's end. Not so with the Ogden enthusiasts, and they are telling their friends that they have seen many worth-while scenes, but Utah for them anytime. |
