Show SPEEDING INTERESTS 0. SJi EUROPE Tho struggle for supremacy to bo waged this year on the Bpeedways between be-tween European and American cars and drivers, points out W. A. Rosa of the Ogden Motor Car company, local distributors for tho Hudson "Super-Six" "Super-Six" and Essex cars, is of more interest inter-est than over borore because it forecasts fore-casts a new era of automobile design. This was indciated at the Indianapolis speedway last year when a Baby Peugeot Peu-geot showed its heels to cars of almost twice its size, thus proving that brute size is not essential to performance. This means lighter and smaller cars than ever before and therefore more economical eco-nomical cars. But, despite this limitation limi-tation in aire, it is expected that tho speed will be higher than ever and because be-cause of the improvement in matorials, th reliability of cars will be greater. European designers are already busy on special speed creations along" these new lines. In America, as far as is known, the manufacturers are doing little, being too busy with production, but many drivers are working on their own mounts. DePalma, it i3 understood, under-stood, is under contract to drive a French car, but rumors come from Detroit De-troit lhat'he may again appear at the wheel of an American car. Deusenburg is known to have three small eights which will bo eligible and the Chevrolet brothers are sure to be contenders. As to the drivers, Earl Cooper, a former member of tho Stutz racing team,thas just bought a stock Essex as has Ira Vnil, who formerly drove a Hudson Super-Six, and Dave Lewis, an ex-Dousenberg driver. Tho displacement of the Essex Is only 179 inches, so it comes well with-Ing with-Ing the Indianapolis limits. This together to-gether with the remarkable enduranqo it has displayed, may result in its entry en-try in- some of the big speedway events by individuals, but it Is not believed that the Essex factory will take any active part in speed contests this year. |
