Show FUEL OIL if FINE Great Increase in" Past Few Years Is 1700 Per Cent From 1900 lo 191S the number or I cars and trucks in service has Increased In-creased about 1.700 per cent, and during dur-ing the same period, gasoline produc lion made a gain of 56 per cent, while crude oil increased only 95 per cent in tho Unitew States. This, combined with a growing demand for fuel oil for marine purposes and the fact that production of gasoline is rapidly approaching ap-proaching a limit, means a possible famine, or at least an important in crease in the price of gasoline, according ac-cording to N. A. C. Smith of the bureau of mines, department of the Interior. This problem may be solved by the Judicious use of fuel oil. which" constitutes con-stitutes more than 50 per cent of the products obtained from crude oil refined re-fined in this country, and which, if used in raising steam under boilers and in internal combustion engines of the Diesel type, would be more profitable. prof-itable. ; "If enginers are about lo design an automobile or truck engine," states Smith, "that will use fuel oil In a satisfactory manner, they will relieve tho danger of thei mpending shortage and make possible the desirable exten-j slon of the use of the automobile and truck. "The last ten years," declared Smith, "have sent an enormous Increase In-crease in the demand for petroleum: products. This increased demand has been felt in all phases of the oil rofin-j ing industry especially oil branches. I The biggest increase of all, however, j has been In the demand for .motor gasoline, which has been caused by the tremendously rapid growth in the use of the automobile.
