Show JY by Corey W. Grua J Public Info. Chairman, I LUintah Co. Unit Amer. Cancer Soc-r Smokeout results QUESTION : What were the results of this year's Great American Smokeout? ANSWER: The Smokeout is a difficult dif-ficult program to measure. Results are in now on the national effort. A random telephone survey conducted in 48 states and the District of Columbia on' Thursday morning, Nov. 15, showed that 35 percent of the identified adult cigarette smokers in total of 2,224 households were trying to quit smoking ' for the day. Since there are an estimated '52,000,000 adult cigarette smokers in the country, this means that about 18,200,000 of them participated in the Great American Smokeout. A Gallup Survey conducted after the 1978 Smokeout indicated that 14,000,000 were trying to quit a year ago on Smokeout Day. This year's survey showed that of the 4,907 adults in the households reached, 1,641, or 33.4 percent, are smokers. Fifty-five divisions participated with approximately 450 volunteers. The number of interviewees who were aware that Thursday was Smokeout day was 1,435 or M.5 percent. I would suspect that figure was even higher in the Vernal area because of the extensive coverage that our local media gave the event. Many people I've heard of gave up the cigarette habit for the day and I'd bet that many are still going "cold turkey." If you're one of them, we are keeping the fingers crossed for you. We volunteers in the Uintah Unit of the American Cancer Society join together to wish you a happy and cancer free new year. Thanks to each of you who assisted in the fight against cancer during 1!)7!). Together, we're . gaining! |
