The Vernal Junior High 9th grade Panthers thumped Heber, Thursday, 56 to 43. Vernal has a 4-0 record. ' 1 Pconfl hers gjeiira 4-9 record by bombing Kcjngely and EKIeber The Vernal Junior high Panthers improved their record to 4-0 due to a 56 to 43 bombing of the Heber City cagers and a 68 to 30 massacre of Rangely, Colorado. Vernal jumped out to a 14 to 11 lead in the first quarter in the battle with Heber, Thursday. The score at the end of the second quarter was: Vernal, 27 and Heber, 19. Vernal put in 14 points in the third quarter and ten counters were tossed in by Heber to make the score after three quarters, Vernal, 41 and Heber, 29. The final score was: Vernal, 56 and Heber, 43. Brian McNamara poured in 19 points on nine field goals and one free throw. Galen Turner tossed in 15 points. Also , scoring counters were : Jerry Haslem, 9; Doug Bowen, 6; Clark Emery, 4; Doug Allen, 2 and Kary Hamilton, 1. Vernal tossed in 26 field goals and converted 4 out of 14 free throws. Luke was the top scorer in the game for Heber City with 15 points. Ellis tossed in 11 counter. Heber hit 19 out of 29 free throws and put in 12 field goals. Luke hit 9 out of 11 free throws. Free throw marks for Vernal were: Haslem 1-4; McNamara, 1-5; Hamilton, 1-2 and Turner, 1-2. The win over Heber was Vernal's fourth win in a row. "We have improved im-proved a great deal. This is the best we have played this year. We were missing two starters. Neldon Seitz was out with the flu and Jeff Drollinger has a broken foot. He should be back in about three weeks. We moved the ball well and played great pressure defense," stated Vernal Junior High 9th grade hoop coach, Pete Rencher. Vernal crushed Rangely Junior High, 68 to 30, on December 18. The Panthers . jumped out to a 17 to 4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams scored eight points in the second quarter to make the score, 25 to 12 in favor of Vernal. The Panthers blew the game wide open when they massacred the Rangely hoopsters with a 28 to 6 scoring attack, which made the score at the end of the third quarter, Vernal 53, and Rangely, 18. The final score was: Vernal, 68 and Rangely, 30. Vernal had three men, Mike Weldon, 14; Doug Allen, 12 and Clark Emery, 11, in double figures. Also putting in points were: Brj.an McNamara, 8; Jeff Drollinger, 6; Jerry Haslem 6; Quint Slade, 4; Doug Bowen, 3; Neldon Seitz. 2 and Jim Abegglen, 2. Vernal tossed in 32 field goals and converted 6 out of 29 free throws. Free throw marks for Vernal were: Emery, 1-5; Haslem 2-6' McNamara, 0-1; Allen, 2-4; Weldon i 3; Abegglen, 0-2; and Bowen, i-2 Weldon put in 7 field goals. The top scorers for Rangely were Williams, 10 and Hogan, 7. Rangely put in 11 field goals and converted 8 out of 17 free throws. The Vernal Panthers will compete in the Huntington Tournament, January 4 and will battle Orem on the road January 10. Vernal will host Craig' January 12 and Rock Springs, January 15.
