Show Uintah junior varsity cagers topple Central Uintah High School's junior varsity cagers were behind 17 to 8 after one quarter of action in the battle with Grand Junction Central, Thursday, but they outscored the Warriors, 62 to 42, in the second, third and fourth quarters to win the contest, 70 to 59. The win improves im-proves Uintah's junior varsity mark to 3-0 in games on the basketball schedule. Uintah has toppled Lehi, Union and Grand Junction Central. The Warriors had a nine-point lead going into the second quarter, but the Utes outscored Central, 16 to 10, to cut Grand Junction's advantage to 27 to 24. Uintah bombed Central, 24 to 8, for a 48 to 35 lead after three quarters of action. The final score was: Uintah, 70 and Grand Junction Central, 59. Junior, Dave Emery and sophomore, Mike Johnson, were the top scorers in the game with 17 points. Handy McNamara and Devin Wright put in 8 counters. Also scoring points were: Dave Allen, 6; Roger Walker, 4; Gary Galley, 4; Gary Watkins, 4 and Scott Peterson, 2. Vernal put in 32 field goals and connected on 6 out of 9 free throws. When asked to comment on the win over Grand Junction Central, Uintah junior varsity cage coach, Rick Phillips, said, "The kids put a good effort ef-fort out to come from behind and win. It shows what they can do when they hustle hus-tle all the time. I was really happy with our teamwork and performance." The Uintah junior varsity team will encounter Union, Friday and Green River, Wyoming, Saturday on the road. The Utes will take on Cyprus in Magna, January 4, and will host Judge Memorial, January 11 and Murray, January 18. Uintah will battle Tooele on the road, January 25. |
