Show Latest Acrouut of the Mont Pelee Horror Professor Angelo llcllprlu, president of tlie Philadelphia Geographical society, so-ciety, who Is iu Alartinlque In tho interest in-terest of tlie National Geographical society, has made the following report on thu reccut eruptions of Alonl Pelee: "The scene of destruction lu the last eruption of Alont Poleofur surpluses In extent tlmt of tho eruption of Aluy 8, when St. Pierre was destroyed, and includes in-cludes tho broud area lying between Muoouba and Curbet, nnd Involve. Haute Toms tie Itourden, llasso Pointe, Alorne llalu! and Ajoupa lloulllon, where alone upwards of 300 persons were killed, as well as Morue Rouge, with a deatli list of probably not less thun l.loii persons. Alorne Capot and the heights somewhat tills side of l'oncla St. Denis, the blast, however, leaving tlio last uained place untouched. Great cinders fell also over tho region of (.rand Riviere, and Precheur Is covered cov-ered deep with ashes. In Curbet the ashes lie one foot deep and nearly tho same amount covers tho ruins of nt. I ierre. All of Alorne Rouge, with thu txcept.on of about four houses and the beautiful church, bus been swept to the ground and tb0 greater part of tho town has been burned up. At Ajoupa Iloullllon, where one-half of the town has been prostrated, tbere Is no trace of flro of any kind." |
