The forest fires now raging in tho mountains of western Oregon and westeru Washington are probably the most widespread ever known. Within a radius of seventy-five miles of Portland, Port-land, Ore., five people aro missing and It is thought they have perished In tho flames. Tlio flames havo driven many people from their homes and it is known that many houses, barns and much livestock live-stock havo been destroyed. At Lents, Oregon, several houses were burned and the lino of the Oregon Water Power fc Railway company to that village has been disabled. At Undal Veil, thirty miles east of Portland, Port-land, two saw mills burned and In Clackamas county, near Sprlngwaler, at least fifteen houses and bams have been destroyed. In Clark county, Wash., ten miles from Vancouvor, eight farm houses were burned and three lives are reported re-ported lost. In Portland the houses are covered with ashes and tho lights had to be turned on early in the afternoon on account of thu thick smoke which floods the city. The wife of John Alyers, a farmer, was burned to death In their home In Claik county, Washington. |
