Show I Salt hake Merchants Report Average Sales for Jie-tween Jie-tween Seasons. STOCKS OF HKAVY GOODS RBDUCHI) TO A MINIMUM Automobiles Becoming an. Important Im-portant Factor in Business of ihe City. Merchants of Salt Lake report .business .busi-ness in all lines (luring the lust week on a normnl basis for t lie soason. with the lohimo of business generally showing a slight, gain over tho corresponding pcr-iod pcr-iod for February or last year. The outlook out-look for spring trade is most encouraging encourag-ing and collections, which have been slow sinco tho first of the year, are showing an improvement in nearly every ev-ery line. I 'Special sales arc being continued by the dry goods houses and tho clearance of winter goods has been unusually sood. As an example of vthis condition, one dealer in women 's apparel reports that out of a largo stock he has on hand less than Iwcnly winter suits. A few of the buyers have returned from tho cast during tho last week, but. most, of thorn are still making their selections of spring and summer goods and only i fow shipments aro expected to arrive before March 1. An exception to this is shown in footwear, however, for several sev-eral stores aro already displaying thoir spring lines of shoes and tho demand has boon excellent during the last week. In millinery, also, tho spring styles are appearing in the windows of some or the stores, although as yet there has been little demand for the newest "creations." "cre-ations." Several of the local stores havo attempted at-tempted to rush the carpet season by attractive displays, but, the demand has been light, and no rush in this line is expected until moving time. In anticipation antici-pation of a strong demand in tho' spring, .Mocks aro being replenished and excellent excel-lent displays in all lines of house furnishings' fur-nishings' will be mado within tho next few weeks. Just a Little "Mannish." Tn women's suits, tho local dealers have been receiving their first scattering scatter-ing consignments during the last week. The advance showing of styles is in marked contrast with thoso of last fall I in that coats arc much shorter and, although al-though tho waist line is defined, practically prac-tically all of the "smart" suits are cut in a decidedly mannish st'lq and materials arc copies of the suitings which havo been regarded as masculine property for several years. Hardware dcnlcrs roport; a rush of orders or-ders that bids fair to place the volume of business for the first throe months 'if the vear at least 10 per cent above hat for tho first ouartcr of 1009. As in the past, tho demand for farming I implements and supplies makes up a I large volumo of the trade, and harness Hales aro increasing daily. Considerable interest is being shown in the coming automobile show and local dealers are placing orders far-ahead of their last year's distribution. Slight advances arc reported in many lines of canned goods, while prices o"f stable groceries remain generally unchanged. un-changed. Butter if? still regarded as a luxury at -10 cents for '15 to 16 ounce's" and local dealers roport a continued con-tinued heavy demand for oleomargarine nt prices which j'ield them even a greater great-er profit than thc' make on butter. Green vegetables are arriving in fair quantities, but -prices arc still on a level which places most of the fresh vegetables vege-tables m the class of luxuries for the average householder. Local Securities. John C. Cutler. ,'Ir.. in his weekly review re-view of the market for local industrial and financial securities, makes tho following fol-lowing comment: "Thcro has been a largo amount of nctivitj' in tho local stock list in the week as well as in tho buying and selling sell-ing of city improvement warrants, the latter going in large quantities at H per cent discount. Utah-Idaho Sugar preferred sold at $8.90 to $8.96, .but shaded back slightly at the end of the week. Common advanced to .$3.03, but is scarce at. that rate.
