Show LARGEST STEEL PASSENGER CAR EQUIPMENT IN WORLD By Leased Wire to The Tribune PHILADELPHIA, Pa,, Feb. 12. What is probably tho largest steel passenger pas-senger car equipment owned by any railroad in the world is that of the Pennsylvania railroad, which, with the cars just completed and thoso in course of construction, has 630 all-stoel passenger pas-senger cars. With this large number of steel cars, the Pennsylvania railroad is now to start tho operation of all-steel all-steel passenger trains on some of its lines of densest traflic. On August 12, 190G, tho Pennsylvania railroad announced an-nounced that all future- iiasscngcr equipment equip-ment would be built of steel; not only steely frame, but steel and non-collapsible in ever' particular. In planning the cars aud establishing the standards, which arc now copied in all Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania passenger curs, no expense has been spared by the company to build a coach which should provide tho greatest great-est possible strength, a steel framing which could not be affectod by fire, an inside lining which should bo absolutely absolute-ly tinbnrnable, and, at tho same time, one that would not conduct heat or sound. The Pennsylvania railroad in November. Novem-ber. 1900, ordered 100 all-steel passenger cars. Since that time additional orders have been placed and there aro now in service on the company's lines 2-13 coaches, 10 dining cars, 21 combination passenger and baggage cars, 29 baggage cars, IS postal cars, and ono company car, a total of 324 cars. In course of construction there aro 140 coaches, 'M dining cars, 1S combination passenger and baggage cars, 4 bnggage cars, -12 postal cars, 27 mail storago cars and 31 baggage and mail carB. The Pullman compairy, at the instance of tho Pennsylvania railroad, has for the past four years been at work designing de-signing all-steel parlor and sleeping cars. Some H00 such cars arc shortly to be completed and placed in service on the Pennsylvania railroad. With tho all-stoel passenger equipment equip-ment now in service or on order, and some 250 steel cars to bo ordered on the 1910 passenger equipment programme pro-gramme the Pennsylvania railroad will, in a short lime, have in service about 900 of its own steel passenger cars and 500 steel Pullman cars. |
