Show YANKEE GOLFERS TO FJGHTWITHBRITSSH Another Invasion of Americans Into England to Compete for Honors. ALREADY HOLD TITLES FOR POLO, YACHTING, AVIATION Date Set for the Golf Match Is Next, Wednesday; Who Will Captain Teams. BY RICHARD DAIILGEEN. Spoelnl Cablo to The Tribune. LONDON'. Fob. 12. With America the possessor of tho International honors in polo, yacht racing and aviation, now comes another Invasion next week whon a team of l'ankoe professional Kolfcrs will meet a team of resident professionals upon a course near London. Tho dale set for tho match was February 10. J. II. Taylor has been named to captain the English team and Aleck Smith tho American. Amer-ican. There has been some ojicstlon over since tho Americans arrived here whether they could be called, strictly speaking, n real representative team of tho United States. Among them aro Gil Nichols, Isaac Mackie. James Maiden, David Hun-tur, Hun-tur, Peter Robertson, II. H. Barker and ono or two others. There Is no question that Barker and Smith are tho beat players play-ers In the party, but, as expert ns they aro. It Is hardly likely that they will rank with Taylor and James Braid. As an amateur here Barker showed up mighty well. Four years ago he won' the Irish open championship nt Porlrusb !n fino form. He tried for the British amntur championship, but "norves" wore his undoing and ho lost to Guy Campbell. Aleck Smith is a good player. Three years ago he took part In our open .championship at Ilolylake and finished twenty-llfth. But. as tho players camu over here for a holiday, as I understand It, It would scarcely be Just to say they represent tho United States. Gilbert Nichols would doubtless get his place on a national team, for ho was second In tho United States open championships two years ago. lie is a native of Foik-slonc, Foik-slonc, and bis brother. Bernard Nichols, was tho only man to bear Harry Vardon on level terms. It I3 odd thnt America has been so slow In producing llrst-class professionals. I should attribute It to the queer American courses. Betting on tho Dorby. Betting has already started upon the Derby, although that event Is far away, and even ns a future it Is vague. One or two London lnyera have been offering tho cramped rato of 3 to 1 against Lcm-horg, Lcm-horg, but although 150 to 5a has been laid on at least two occasions during the past week. 1 to 1 was always obtainable. Of the other candidates talked about, Nell Gow (Danny Maher's mount) Is nominally a 5 to 1 chance. Admiral Ilawke has boon selling at S to 1, with quite a number of takers, although no extremely largo bets have boon laid. Trossady Is by far the longest of the four first favorites, being sold now at 10 to 1. The Derby will be run at Epsom Downs on June 1. hut even nt this early date the firm of Topping & Splndlor In Flushing Flush-ing Ib being lloodad with queries as to the probable winner. Tho only advantage advan-tage in wagering nt this time lies In se-ourlntr se-ourlntr better odds. Sclf-Orowncd Champions. Manager VIonne of the Wonderland Boxing club of Paris and Victor Breyer are tho latest twain to advocate the proposed pro-posed board of control. Questions calling for tne existence of such a board aro arising aris-ing constantly. The latest question under discussion by French sportsmen Is tho one that deals with self-crowned world's champions. As things aro at present, the holders of such titles. It Is felt, have not beaten a representative boxer of nations coming within the Jurisdiction of the proposed board's control. In Franco there does not yet exist champions good enough to cope with candidates for the world's title. This will, nevertheless, eventually come, for many French lads, especially In the bantam, feather and lightweight divisions, arc fast qualifying for future high honors. In England champions at standard weights aro now springing Into official recognition. It Is feasible to expect that each division , will in time have Its representative English champion who, as holder of Lord Lonsdale's Lons-dale's championship belt, must be defeated defeat-ed before any foreign boxer can lay claim to the world title This step It appears may shortly bo followed In France. If Australia and America will do likewise, then things will take a practical footing and tho vexed question of supreme title holders bo finally settled. Negotiating for Fights. B. II. Goodwin, ono of the promoters of roller skating In London and mnnngcr of tho Mountain Ash Pavilion and Skating Skat-ing Rink company. Is entering the boxing Held and Is negotiating for a number of .ights. This means, of course that tho Mountain Ash Pavilion will be run In opposition to the National Sporting club and with tho added competition will doubtless come a better variety of the sport. Mr. Goodwin Is Incidentally offering offer-ing some very big purses. For Instance ho told Freddy Welsh that ho would give a 525.000 purso for a fight between Welsh and Nelson. He offered McFarland a $10.-000 $10.-000 purse and likewise be mude the same offer to Thomas. Don't Like Now Method. British sporting writers are finding fault with tho new method of publishing weights 'for races several months before they are run. Tho Cltv and Suburban, which will bo run nt Epsom Downs In tho spring, have already been published, much to the chagrin of several writers who term this "another Amorlcnn system sys-tem which is ousting British method's." As a writer in Truth says: "It would have been full time to bring out tho Epsom Ep-som weights on March 17. after the race for the Lincolnshire handicap, and tpy might very well hove been deferred until a v.eck Inter, as the race Is not run until un-til April 20. There Is no object whatever what-ever In publishing tho weights for anv handicap so preposterously early, and the City and Suburban Is now merely n post-betting post-betting race- " Of course, with a subscription sub-scription handicap there is the more chance of a large acceptanco if the weights arc brought out long beforo the raco Is run, nnd I suppose this Is tho real reason why the managers of the Epsom Ep-som nnd other meetings persist In tho arrangement, although It is now altogether alto-gether obsolete " Weights for Handicap. The weights for tho ICempton Park Jubilee handicap have also been published, pub-lished, the race being run on Mav 7. Last spring Dnrk Ilonold would have 'won the Lincolnshire, the City and Suburban, the Newbury Spring cup and the Kemp-ton Kemp-ton Park Jublloo handicap If ho had been trained for those racoc. After this escape, surely It might have been decided de-cided not again to run the risk of a "thrown-ln" horse clearing the board of the spring handicaps. Dark Ronald was let off with approximately 100 pounds In the Newbury Spring cup. He would, no doubt, havo been given tho same weight at Lincoln, Epsom and Kempton Park, and ail three handlenps would have been at his mercy. There Is not now a particle par-ticle of Interest in the spring hnudicaps. as they are all on precisely the same lines anil usually most indifferent productions. The Chester authorities have again very wisely postponed thu closing of the Ches- Continttcd on Following Pago. YANKEE GOLFERS TO FIGHT WITH BRITISH Continued from Preceding Pngc. ter cup until a much later dale. This hundlcup Is to close on March 8. which will be the Tuesday boforo Lincoln. The Royal Hunt cup Is about the most successful suc-cessful handicap of the whole year, and tho weights ;ire published only thirteen days before the race takes place. It Is a plly that this benslblo arrangement Is not adopted elsewhere. VanderbUt Racing Stable. Of the fifty horses lo bo raced by William Wil-liam IC VanderbUt on tho French turf In 1010, nearly all have been bred by Mr. VandcrbilL The names of many of the dams are recognized as American horses which gained fame upon racecourses race-courses In the ("nlted States some years ao. For tin first lime offspring of Mr. Vanderblll's grent race horses Malntenou and Prestige will face tho starter this year. Mr Teslo has secured Jockey W. Williams, Wil-liams, who won the Royal Hunt cup on Dark Ronald, to rldo for him in Italy this year, |
