Show WESTHGHOUSt HAD TO PEPi Ofi OTHERS Without Good Lieutenants He Never Would Have Made Success. By Leased Wire to Tho Tribune. NEW YORK, Feb. 12. A party were discussing Georgo Wcstinghousc, his achievements as a manufacturer, as an Inventor in air, steam, electricity and gas. when somo ono remarked: "Yes, Mr. Wcstlnghouso's success has been won-dorftil, won-dorftil, but he could never havo done all these marvelous things if ho had not had the men to help him. and to get tholr assistance Mr. Wcstinghousc had the possession of a rare judgment of men. That ho is endowed willi this Judgment to a very high degree has been demonstrated demon-strated recently by an Incident which bus Jusl conio under my notice. About two years ago, when one of his companies the Westlnghouso Machine company, to be exact was in difficulties difficul-ties through tho panic of 1007, Mr. Westlnghouso West-lnghouso came, to the conclusion that the management of tho concern was not In tho proper hands, and ho decided to jnako a change. He had In his employ a young engineer, who for several years had been In charge of ono of his private enterprises out west. In this position tho young man had shown rare Judgment Judg-ment and considerable executive ability. "Just tho man," argued Mr. Wcstinghousc. Wcsting-housc. "to lake churgo of tho Machine company." He laid tho matter beforo the board of directors of the company, which listened but refused lo fall In with tho president's views, and put a man of their own In. He held tho Job for about a year and proved unsatisfactory. Then Mr. Wcstinghousc called tho same young engineer, mado him general manager, and told him to go ahead and make good. That young man was H. T. Hcrr of Denver. Colo., general manngor of the Wctstlngliouse Machine company since January, 1009. He now has an organization organiza-tion of men around him in the shops which Is not surpassed anywhere. He has Increased tho productive force of the company threefold. Ho has now a works llliod with order, and the company Is doing a business ofuul to what It did during the most prosoprous period in Its history. So much for the vindication of Mr'. Wostinghouse as to hla Judgment of men. |
