Show BOISE GRAND JURY DOES "WHITEWASHING" Returns Three Indictments, but Can Find Nothing Indicating Indicat-ing Meat Trust. Special to The Tribune. BOISE, Ida., Feb. 12. After a strenuous stren-uous week's session the special grand jury reported this evening, returning thrco indictments involving tho meat trust, and while the findings of tho body are secret, it can be stated with author-1 Sty that tho indictments aro against Swift & Co.. tho Idaho Dressod Beef company and ho Boise Butcher com-pan-, all charged with Belling short weight lard. These three cases wero tried in the justice court. Swift & Co. was acquitted and tho two others convicted con-victed and fined $200. Both cases were appealed to the district court. Tn a special report tho jury acknowledged acknowl-edged that it is confident a coal trust is in existence and that most of the dealers in the city aro members of the union; that this trust raised tho price of coal and organized for that purpose. This evidence the jury did not consider con-sider sufficient on which to bring indictments in-dictments against, the coal dealers. Tho jury also roports that it can find no indications pointing to the existence of a meat trust, although it is admitted that thcro is a combination of meat men hero who control practically the trade of the city. The jury goes on lo say thnt there ih no evidence to show that this combination was effected to raiso the price of ment or that it did raise tho price. Tho general view taken here by consumers con-sumers over the findings of tho jury is one of disappointment, for they aro inclined to t he opinion that a whitewash white-wash has been effected in thnt tho three indictments returned only involve defendants de-fendants whoso cases had thoroughly been tested out in tho lower court. |
