Show HITEO DISCHARGE i CAMP KEARNY. Jan. 20. Scenes about the Utah artillery camp are assuming as-suming a more warlike aspect with each passing day. With hundreds of men standing In groups and awaiting the arrival of low clouds of vapor to hurriedly don the gas masks, others at work on the gun scords popping away with pistols at small targets, the scene comes true to actual war. The latest war touch was added during tho past week, when the correspondent, roaming across the fields to the gun emplacements, stumbled over a prostrate pros-trate soldier, lying face downward. I Tho Utah artillerymen today took advantage of the warm, sunny weather weath-er by staging surf bathing parties, I trips to the ocean resorts and to the exposition grounds, where thousands of sailors are. now under instructions.' Many of the artillerymen have friends ! enlisted in the naval school, and each leave day make the trip to visit them. ! Gas defense training will be again continued tomorrow at camp. However, no announcement has yet been made . as to which organization will next undergo the test. Pistol practice, foot drills, construction work on the gun emplacements, and gun drill is scheduled sched-uled for the coming week's training. Colonel R. W. Young and Majors Le-Roy Le-Roy Bourne, W. E. Kneass and Ale.x, R. Thomas will make another journey to Fort Rosecrans Tuesday to witness the targot work of the big coast defense de-fense guns'. A discharge for physical disabilities has been granted to Private Channing KImery of B battery. He Is now on his way to Salt Lake. Private Heber C Russell of B battery has been trans - j ferred to the divisional veterinary corps. Private Luther A. Pullins of B battery has been transferred to auxiliary auxil-iary depot No. 330 and will hereafter 'be permanently quartered with this organization. City Commissioner Karl A. Scheid of Salt Lake left this morning for Utah, after completing his conferences with Martin Mulvoy In regard to the chief of police position. Mr. Scheid met many of his frionds who are members of tho regiment, but did not got tho opportunity of inspecting inspect-ing the camp. He said that .he would be in San Diego in two months and then would visit tho Utnh camp. |
