For the first fla ,' time in many years women may be al- ip ' lowed to compete when the national S jj j ski tournament is held at Cary. IH-. 3 i January 26 and 27. According to offl- H U ;j cials of the Norge Ski club, which is I) 1 i 5 staging the meet, if any of tbo fair sex H ; 1 feel brave enough to try tho giant $A . slide at Carey thoy will be allowed Rmj J i J to compete. I ! Whether tho ski jumpers will allow ft this, howaver, Is a question. Last year Rma I , i the professionals nearly went on a j jfltrlko because several women had Hl ' been given the right to compete. In face of the war conditions, however, it is probable that the pros will welcome wel-come a little added competition, as several of the well-known ski jumpers arc in military service. It will take a brave woman to try the jump, however. The big slide is tilted at a 70-degree angle, and the jumper acquires a speed of fifty to seventy miles an hour before reaching the takeoff. Then there is a drop of about sixty feet before tUe surface of the hill Is reached, and it requires an expert to keep from landing on his face. A number of local experts journeyed journey-ed to (he Cary slide today and the well -packed snow was productive of some goodxmarks. Jumps of 130 feet were numerous, and it seems certain that Ragnar Omtvedl's 192-foot record will be broken. |
