The order of Fuel Administrator Garfield cutting off heat to business houses today was generally observed, although a number of saloonkeepers disregarded the spirit spir-it of tho mandato by serving drinks to customers between the hours of Siidnlght and 1 o'clock a. m.p although o fuel was used. Bartenders wearing sweaters, overcoats and gloves dispensed dis-pensed drinks to muffed patrons in I rooms -where the heat had been shut off. M. J. McCarthy, secretary of the Liquor Li-quor Dealers' Protective association, said: "I regret that we wero not able to impress upon all our members that the fuel administration desired no liquor to bo sold. The Liquor Dealers' association asso-ciation does not believe in obeying the letter and violating the spirit of the law." It was estimated that 200,000 persons per-sons were idle in the Chicago district. nn |
