Show TRAITORS HE 1 . ME 1 CHURCH SALT LAKE. Jan. 21. "While we know we are not what wo ought to be we Americans we know Ave are on the right side." said Apostle James E. Talmage in the tabernacle services yesterday afternoon. "There is no place in this church for traitors, whether whe-ther they be native or foreign born." continued Apostle Talmage, "but all members, to bo in good standing and I onjoying the true spirit of their religion, relig-ion, must be loyal to tho nation which gives them its protection. If they be not loyal let them be dealt with." Dr. Talmage advised members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints io exercise forbearance and Christian charity toward those of German Ger-man birth, but nevertheless demand that the latter control their utterances and cultivate loyalty to the country of their adoption which affords them the freedom which they sought when they came to it. He said that he realized rea-lized the German's love of fatherland and admired him for it, but that his duly was to prove his gratitude for liberty by coming wholeheartedly to the support of the nation which guarantees guar-antees to him that boon. Recalls Prediction. Attention was called by tho speaker to a prediction made in the tabernacle pulpit come months prior to Au?aist. 1914, by Dr. David Starr Jordan, that business r.nd industrial interests of the world s 'nations were so interwoven I ' that a Svar like that now in progress ! would be utterly impossible. Apostle) I Talmage said that in his premises to I that prediction. Dr. Jordan had failed to take imo account the most inipor- tant factor. These were the prophe-' prophe-' cies of the ancient prophets. Dr. Jor-I Jor-I dan ran counter to theso, Mr. Talmage said. "Wo are now at the apex of a . tremendous tre-mendous crisis," Dr. Talmage said. "The church has done, is doing and shall yet do its part. Wo are more vitally interested in this mighty struggle strug-gle than any other people on earth. The freedom, tolerance and rights we ask for ourselves must bo taught and accorded to all nations as a necessary preliminary to the coming of the Christ. Unslintlngly we shall give ourselves our-selves and our sons and our substance to bring about vindication of the rights of men." In his preliminary remarks, Apostle Talmage said "Children are welcomo in this church, and we think them worth taking care of." He read some comparative vital statistics which placed plac-ed the church membership in the lead in the United States in health and physical standing. nn |
