JEO ABBOTT HAS AROUSED INTEREST Railroad men who heard and have read the address of Jed Abbott, of the claims dpeartment of the Southern Pa -1 clflc, delivered last week at the session ses-sion of the Safety First committee. pronounce it the greatest document of its kind ever made before a safety first meeting. "Mr. Abboit intended to make railroad rail-road men and the general public think and he has accompilsnec that result," said J. E. Mack, chief clerk to J. H. Dodds, superintendent of the O. U. R. & D.," this morning. "He handled this safoty-first proposition and its special significance during these war times, without gloves. He acquainted railroad rail-road men with a few of the conditions which actually have prevailed and which again may prevail. "It is my opinion, and I presume its the opinion of every other ordinarily informed man, that too much care and caution cannot be practiced at this time. The United States is in a death grapple with the best organized and most concentrated autocracy in . the history of the world an autocracy, too, that will stop at nothing, that knows neither the law of nations, of civilization or of humanity; an organization organ-ization that Is more savage than old Geronimo in his bloodthlrstlest days. It Is impossible to understand just who is in the employe of tho kaiser and who is loyal to America. The only defense civilization has is to be eternally eter-nally vigilant, and that is precisely what Mr. Abbott urged." The address was delivered at a meeting presided over by Superintendent Superin-tendent Dodds, as chairman. It went into details and gave specific Instances of conditions which might be of German Ger-man origin and a part of Germany's espionage system. The possibility "of railroad wrecks, factory explosions, and various other calamities was earnestly ear-nestly discussed and an appeal made to every railroad man to be alert at all times. rr |
