Show Objects to (R' rated movies Dear Editor: Are there any Davis County residents left with a strong sense of morals and good ethics? My concern relates to our local movie theaters and the quality of movies shown there. As many Bountiful residents may or may not be aware, the largest percentage of movies shown today are "R"-rated. Those who indulge themselves in the "adult" movies, may tell you that there is really nothing wrong with them, that the only reason they have received the "R" rating is because of violence in the movie. Occasionally this may be the case but it is more often the exception. "R"-rated movies, in general, receive that rating because of the filthy language, immoral acts, and general indecency contained con-tained therein. True, a large portion of the movie may be "O.K.," but those smaller segments of the show where evil, degrading, or immoral acts are represented are the ones that leave the deepest impression on the mind. I don't think our intention is to foster an evil society. As we allow those "adult" movies to be shown in our neighborhood, however, we are allowing bad seeds to be planted in the souls of our friends and families. These seeds may seem small and insignificant at first, but as previous studies have proven, the viewing of pornographic or immoral material leads to immoral thoughts, and often times eventually to immoral actions. Many who have committed rape or other similar crimes, will confess that their evil act stemmed from viewing pornographic material or watching an immoral act on television or in the movie house. Whatever happened to the old-time movies with their creative plots, moving drama, romantic scenes but without the explicit sex that is shown in the theaters today? Let's encourage our local theaters to show more "G" and "PG" movies that every- . one can watch without embarrassment. The viewing of wholesome whole-some entertainment is our right as conscientious citizens. Heidi S. Marciniak |
