Show D. C. Library will start VCR collection By TOM BUSSELBERG - FARMINGTON There never seems enough money to buy all the books the Davis County Library would like. They may still be true, but at least there's $10,000 extra earmarked ear-marked for 1987, says Jeanne Layton, in presenting the tentative $1.4 million budget. Approved by the library board of trustees, it also includes some additional funds for creation of a video cassette collection. About $10,000 is earmarked, enough to buy 200 cassettes for a. collection nucleus, Ms. Layton says. "We believe it's a good time to develop a video cassette collection. collec-tion. VCR's are very prevalent in our society." A separate budget is being prepared for the new Layton Library. Jeanne Layton In further explaining the move she emphasized, "The cassettes will not be popular titles available everywhere. They'll be more serious, se-rious, those not readily available." They will include "how to" such as for plumbing, to National Geographic-type, Ms. Layton continued. con-tinued. "We'll have video cassettes casset-tes (demand) that aren't being met by the pnvate market and we don't wish to compete with the private sector." The collection will be based in the new Layton-Central Branch set to open in early 1988. Videos can be requested from any branch, however, with a delivery system making it possible to receive the item within a day. "There is no space in Farming-ton Farming-ton (headquarters) plus the Layton location is nearer more population," popula-tion," she explained. No mill levy increase is proposed prop-osed for the library over the previously pre-viously approved two-tenths mill, Ms. Layton said. That tax increase was imposed to help cover construction con-struction of the new Layton library. lib-rary. The tax is set to run l986-'88. "The growth estimate (in tax revenues) re-venues) should be about three percent," per-cent," she said, noting "that should be enough to take care of extra costs." About half the cost of that new facility is coming from Layton's $700,000 accumulated while the city was separated from the county system and $200,000 from federal library construction sources. County commissioners are still reviewing proposed salary schedules, sche-dules, so no figures were included. Last year, nearly half the budget went for employee salaries and benefits. |
