The running game of the Vikings started to pick up with Jim Bender gaining 151 yards himself. Viewmont turns the table, beats East for league win Hatch, he was quite impressed with how the school had rallied behind be-hind the team and created a spirit where winning could be born. "They (the school) were terrific," terri-fic," said the coach, "Everyone got behind us. I'd say it was the neatest homecoming I've ever been involved with here." The Vikings wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard on Friday Fri-day as Jason Burningham connected con-nected with Shandell Smoot on a long touchdown pass to start the game. Smoot snatched the ball and used his speed and agility to go all the way for the score. Before the half was over Viewmont View-mont was ahead 19-7 and could have scored more had a drive not stalled on the East one-yard line. East's only touchdown came on a long pass play in which both the East receiver and the Viewmont defender went up for the ball, with the offense coming out the winner. . . Viewmont added a field goal in ' the third quarter to close out the scoring. Hatch was particularly impressed impress-ed with his defense, especially with the number of young players who played on Friday. Six juniors started for the Vikes on defense. "They responded well," said Hatch. "We held East to 181 total yards while putting up 383 of our own. That's a nice turn-around for us despite the fact our defense has been playing pretty decent all season sea-son long." Viewmont played without Tyrone Hess against East and will probably miss him against Davis this Friday. But Hatch couldn't have been more pleased with the efforts of his three junior linebackers, lineback-ers, Dan Putnam, Jerry Ford, and Clark Duncan. On offense, a change was made there as Viewmont went with Jim Bender at fullback. The senior responded re-sponded well too, with 131 yards on the evening, by far the most yards gained by any Viewmont back this season. Smoot meanwhile mean-while was switched to halfback where he did a "great job too." Smoot has emerged as a good receiver re-ceiver and runner. "They both did good things," said Hatch, "Considering this combination had only a week to get ready." By KEITH DUNCAN VIEWMONT What goes around comes around, and that goes for the opposing teams too. After struggling through two consecutive weeks of losses, ones in which Viewmont had plenty of chances to put a win in their victory column, the Vikes finally turned the tables and pinned a 22-7 defeat upon the East Leopards. The victory was "satisfying" and "well-earned" according to Warren Hatch who just might have the best 2-3 football team in the state. This Friday Hatch's crew will try to even their record overall and make it 2-1 in league as they travel to Kaysville to meet the Davis Darts. The past couple of meetings with Davis have proved to be over by halftime, but the Vikes would like to give the Darts a "full football game this time." . ''We want to give Davis a good football game and I believe we're in a position to do that," said View-mont's View-mont's Hatch. Last Friday's victory was icing on the cake, a great way to top off a homecoming week.
